Looking to buy an EV charger for your home or business premises? One of the major concerns for electric vehicle (EV) owners is being aware of when and how you should charge your vehicle. Malaysians have spent their lives driving internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and filling up at petrol stations before the tank goes empty.
Charging an EV, however, will take a bit more planning, but with the growing incentives and demand for ICE car alternatives, public EV charging stations are now becoming more common.
If you own an EV, the consideration to buy an EV charger for your personal use will allow you to charge your vehicle with ease at your convenience!
Buy an EV Charger for Residential Use
Generally upon purchase of an EV car, a level 1 EV charger which is essentially a power cord, is provided complimentary by the automaker. This user-friendly and easy-to-use charger is compatible with the standard household grounded wall outlet, therefore, allowing users to connect and charge instantly with no further upgrades or modifications to their household main service panel.
- Charging output of 1.44kW – 1.92kW
- Charging duration for a car at 40kWh takes up to 17 hours
- Minimum requirement of one-phase AC configuration to function
- The charging units can be untethered or have tethered cables
- Suitable for workplace or home charging
These chargers are frequently used with Plug-in Hybrid EVs (PHEV) due to its weaker charging output.
A good alternative to level 1 chargers would be the EVLink Wallbox, which is ideal for homes and private properties as it is highly durable and waterproof. The charging output ranges from 7.4kW (single-phase AC) up to 22kW (three-phase AC).
To date, there are 9 charging bays within Schneider Electric’s EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia, with each bay providing 7.4kW through a Type 2 socket outlet. This provides a mileage of 40 kilometers after a 4-hour charging period. The facility is currently operating on a single-phase setup with options in place to upgrade to a three-phase setup to accommodate for 22kW charging capability.
Buy an EV Charger for Commercial Premises
Level 2 charging units are usually found in public locations like shopping malls and business centers where customers would park their cars for a few hours to run errands. This allows EV owners to charge their vehicles while they are off to complete other tasks. These chargers require approximately 4 to 8 hours for a full charge, which is quicker than the level 1 chargers.
In general, the station host determines the prices for level 2 charging, which may vary based on location and operators of the parking facility. You may come across stations with pricing that is based on time or charging capacity, kWh. This will be aside from the standard parking charges that you may need to pay when you enter the parking facility.
Buy EV Chargers for Semi-Public Car Parks
Semi-public car parks require DC Fast Charging because of:
- Charging output of 50 kW to 120 kW
- Short span charging time between 30 minutes to 120 minutes depending on the car model.
- Direct current configuration (DC)
- Charging units use tethered cables
- Commonly found at highway rest areas, shopping malls and office buildings
DC Fast Charging provides ultra-rapid EV charging with higher power via direct current, as compared to Level 2 chargers. They are commonly found located along highways for the convenience of long-distance travellers. DC chargers have the potential to charge EVs up to 80% in 20 minutes. A standard 50kW charge point would take an average of one hour as the charging speed reduces upon achieving full charge.
How EV Charging Works
An EV charger receives electric current from the grid source to be delivered to the EV through a plug or connector. The EV stores the charge (electricity) in a large battery pack in order to power the electric motor. To recharge an EV, the connector will be plugged into the EV inlet via a charging cable. EV batteries only accept DC power.
EV Charging vs. Gasoline Cost
The charging cost of an EV varies based on the vehicle usage, and time and location of charging. EV owners can potentially save an estimated amount of RM63,959.90 over the period of 15 years when they choose to drive an EV instead of an ICE vehicle.
